In the rotary motion seal, oil seal and mechanical seal are usually used. However, the use of oil seal pressure is low, and compared with the O-ring, it is too large and complex, and the process is poor.
Although mechanical seals can be used for high pressure (40MPa), high speed (50 m/s) and high temperature (400 ℃), but the structure is more complex, huge, and high cost, only suitable for some heavy machinery and equipment such as petroleum and chemical industry.
The main problem with O-ring seals for rotary motion is the Joule heating effect. Joule heating effect causes friction heat at the contact between the high-speed rotating shaft and the O-ring seal. The generated heat causes the temperature of these contact parts to rise continuously. The rubber material is severely deformed by heating, and the compression and elongation change. Heat also accelerates the aging of the seal material, reduces the service life of the O-ring seal; destroys the sealing oil film, which causes the oil cut phenomenon and accelerates the wear of the seal.
Based on the above situation, in recent years at home and abroad with the rotary motion of the O-ring has carried on the extensive in-depth research. In order to avoid the Joule heating effect, the key is to correctly select the structural parameters of the O-ring according to the performance of the rubber, mainly the tension and compression rate of the O-ring.
According to the experiment, the O-ring seal for rotary motion is designed to have an inner diameter equal to or slightly larger than the diameter of the rotating shaft, generally 3 to 5 percent larger. When installing the O-ring seal, it is compressed from the inner diameter to the inside, and the compression of the section is also designed to be smaller, generally about 5 percent.

And, as far as possible, the use of heat affected by the small sealing material, fully consider the O-ring installation of the heat dissipation problem. In this way, the working condition of the O-ring seal is greatly improved, and it can be applied to the sealing of rotating shafts with high rotation speed up to 4 m/s.
In recent years, there have been heat-resistant fluorine rubber and wear-resistant polyurethane rubber, and the Joule heating effect of rubber components has a deeper understanding, and research solutions to this problem, designed a new O-ring sealing structure, so that the O-ring can be better applied with high-speed, high-pressure rotary motion.
Because of its small size, simple structure, low cost, good process performance, and wide application range, O-ring seals are being widely promoted in rotary motion sealing devices.
