Silicone rubberapplication in medicine and medical treatment
In the past 20 years, silicone rubber products have been continuously updated, with more than a thousand varieties and grades, mainly used in high-tech, heavy-load automotive, transportation, leisure, medical and other fields.
1. Medical Supplies
Among the many synthetic rubbers, silicone rubber is one of the best. It has the characteristics of non-toxic and tasteless, not afraid of high temperature and cold. At 300 ℃ and -90 ℃, it still maintains a certain strength and elasticity. Silicone rubber also has good electrical insulation, oxygen aging resistance, light aging resistance, mildew resistance, chemical stability, etc. Because of these excellent properties, silicone rubber has been widely used in modern medicine.
1.1 organ or tissue substitutes
These products can be divided into long-term and short-term indwelling products in the body. Products for long-term indwelling in the body include hydrocephalus drainage devices, artificial lungs, retinal implants, artificial meninges, larynx, artificial finger joints, artificial tympanic membranes, tooth impressions and soft pads on the tissue surface of the denture, artificial tendons, artificial heart valve accessories, etc. Short-term indwelling in the body to play the role of rehydration, rescue, drainage injection, anti-adhesion or defoaming products are intravenous intubation, catheter, peritoneal dialysis tube, contact glasses, blood transfusion, pressure relief tube, thoracic drainage tube, gastroscope casing, otitis media ventilation tube, catheter and nasal cannula.
Key components of 1.2 medical machinery
These products include artificial finger joints, artificial breast capsule, soft tissue expander capsule, knee membrane, heart valve, pump tube, bellows, penile prosthesis, artificial skull coating and other products with high physical properties. The heart should be made of medical silicone rubber compound with high strength, high tear resistance, high constant elongation, low deformation and good flexibility.
1.3 cosmetic and repair surgery
In the past 20 years, silicone rubber has also been widely used in cosmetic and repair surgery. Silicone rubber is used to repair facial defects, such as forehead, nose, lower forehead, neck, external ear defects, skull and chest cosmetic surgery. At present, the most controversial of these implants is the artificial breast. From the analysis results, it is considered that the cause of this problem may be caused by leakage of silicone gel filled in the breast prosthesis or foreign body reaction after long-term implantation. This is not the final conclusion, which needs further observation and discussion.
However, in order to eliminate the concerns of implanters about silicone gel filling artificial breasts, safer saline-injected artificial breasts have been developed. Compared with the silicone gel-filled type, this product is relatively much better in terms of feel and sense of security, and even if it leaks slightly, it will not cause harm to the human body.
The 1.4 of drug delivery systems to prolong the efficacy of drugs and improve the specificity and safety of drugs is an important topic in pharmaceutical research. There are two main ways of using silicone rubber to control drug release: encapsulation type and microparticle dispersion type. At present, the use of silicone rubber biomaterials as the matrix of controlled sustained release agent has been used in contraceptives and anti-cancer drugs, and achieved good results. The delivery system can also be used for the controlled release of many other drugs in animals.
1.5 in vitro supplies
Silicone rubber film has the characteristics of good oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability and moisture permeability similar to human skin moisture evaporation, as well as non-toxic to human body, harmless, non-allergic, not easy to cause foreign body reaction or rejection reaction and other advantages.

2 Biomedical engineering
It mainly includes the outer packaging materials of medical devices, medical electrodes and bio-implanted sensors.
2.1 Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy Infusion Device
An all-silicone implantable intraperitoneal chemotherapy catheter system. The device uses medical silicone rubber as raw material and consists of a catheter for a medicine storage box
2.2 medical electrode (plate)
Due to contact with the human body, the material is required to be soft, comfortable, physiologically inert, non-toxic to the human body, non-irritating to the skin, and good air permeability. In the use of the process to withstand high temperature and pressure, solvent disinfection, and performance is not affected. To meet the above requirements, silicone rubber as a substrate is more appropriate.
2.3 biosensor
Not only in basic research, clinical medicine, food fermentation, environmental protection and other aspects of the show a bright future, but also in vivo applications have become possible. Among them, two kinds of biosensors
Biomedical electrodes and implanted sensors are typical examples of in vivo applications. The outside of the biosensor for transplantation usually needs a layer of packaging material to separate the surrounding physiological environment, so the reliability, durability, biocompatibility and so on of the material are put forward higher requirements.
The silicone rubber layer on the outside of the electrode can be very thin, and water and other small molecules can pass through freely. This silicone rubber can be used as an outer packaging for a glucose-sensitive electrode to monitor and regulate glucose levels in the blood of diabetics.
Medical silicone rubber has been widely used in life science, medical equipment, medicine and other fields, but there is still great potential. With the development of life science and the research of biological materials, it will make greater contributions to human society.
