What is silicone rubber and what are its performance characteristics?
Silicone rubber(SiliconeRubber) is a polymer elastic material with both inorganic and organic molecular bonds. Its molecular main bond consists of silicon atoms and oxygen atoms alternately (-Si-o- Si-). The bond energy of silicon-oxygen bond is 370kJ/mol, which is much larger than the carbon-carbon bond energy of 240kJ/mol of ordinary rubber. This is one of the main reasons why silica gel has high thermal stability.
Silicone rubber has the widest working temperature range (-100 ~ 350oC), and has excellent high and low temperature resistance. In addition, it also has excellent thermal stability, electrical insulation, weather resistance, ozone resistance, air permeability, high transparency, tear strength, excellent heat dissipation and excellent adhesion, fluidity and release, some special silicone rubber also has excellent oil resistance, solvent resistance, radiation resistance and the use of ultra-high and low temperature characteristics.
Silicone rubber is a unique synthetic elastomer made of a polymer crosslinked by oxygen and silicon. It has a perfect balance of mechanical and chemical properties, so it can meet the requirements of many demanding applications today. Silicone materials are mainly composed of silicone oil, silicone rubber, silicone resin and silane coupling agent. Silicone rubber is one of the most widely used products with high yield.

Performance characteristics of silicone rubber
Silicone rubber has a stable silicone chemical structure, which can give elastomers unique properties, including biocompatibility, excellent high temperature resistance, chemical resistance, excellent mechanical and electrical properties, natural transparency and translucency. A large number of experiments have proved that compared with other elastomers, silicone rubber shows excellent compatibility with human tissues and body fluids, and the tissue reaction is very low when implanted in the body. Silicone rubber is colorless and odorless, does not encourage bacteria to multiply, and does not stain or corrode other materials. As a medical product, silicone rubber formulations comply with FDA, ISO and three-component biocompatibility guidelines.
Compared with most elastomers, silicone rubber can withstand a very wide temperature range, can remain stable when experiencing temperature changes of -60-260 ℃, and can be sterilized by EtO gas, gamma ray or E ray radiation, cooking and other methods. Silicone rubber can withstand water and a variety of chemical agents, including certain acidic substances, oxidizing chemicals, ammonia and isopropyl alcohol.
However, silicone rubber cannot be mixed with concentrated acids or solvents. Silicone rubber has high tear strength (250ppi) and tensile strength (1500psi), excellent elongation (1250%) and softness, and low compression deformation rate. Soft silicone rubber can always maintain its softness, and the hardness of reinforced gel silicone rubber is the lowest. Silicone rubber has excellent insulating properties and functionality in electrical applications, leaving all comparable materials out of reach. Silicone rubber can maintain insulation and dielectric strength in extreme temperatures, far exceeding the capacity of traditional insulating materials.
